Crystal Heeling Shop Windows
5 Mount Street

A visit to the Arizona desert provided Kirkwood with the initial inspiration for the spring summer 2017 ‘Crystal Heeling’ collection. His eye turning to healing stones, natural rock formations, the myriad of colour tones there and the captivating warm morning light where every day shades of orange, red and pink would mélange as the sun rises. This trip inspired Kirkwood to introduce some more natural elements such as cork, straw and crystals in to the collection along with an increased use of pearls; a precious and yet totally organic mineral now ubiquitous in Nicholas Kirkwood collections for many seasons.

These natural elements offer an interesting tension with harder more industrial parts of the collection. Features such as liquid metallic leathers, Perspex heels, glittering Lurex, powder coated metal lace up fastenings and polished metal or mesh linear detailing often appearing on the same shoe. Contemporary sensory light artists such as James Turrell and Dan Flavin have long provided Kirkwood with sources of inspiration and these influences perhaps show themselves most in these harder details of the collection.

Kirkwood created a jagged floating black lava rock installation peppered with coloured crystals for the windows of the 5 Mount Street flagship store to launch this collection. Pyrite, smoky, rose and lavender quartz crystals are mixed in with highlight styles from the new collection such as Zaha with it’s striking Perspex two-tone heel with metal encasing.
