Nicholas Kirkwood for Marine Serre Autumn Winter 2018
Nicholas Kirkwood creates a stand-out collection of shoes for Marine Serre’s inaugural catwalk collection
Nicholas Kirkwood and emerging designer Marine Serre had their first creative encounter at the LVMH prize finals. Kirkwood was instantly drawn to the Marine Serre aesthetic, seeing her as a Ready-To-Wear creative counterpart. For Kirkwood Marine Serre’s work encapsulates completely modern dressing with its mix of femininity, body conscious silhouettes, luxurious fabrications and sportswear references. After meeting Marine Serre again Kirkwood proposed that they work together and design a capsule collection of shoes for her Autumn Winter 2018 catwalk show.
The capsule catwalk collection comprises a mid-calf boot and shoe, that both have a hidden rubberized metal crescent moon insignia under their heel. This represents a burgeoning Marine Serre brand code and mirroring the signature Nicholas Kirkwood idea of a hidden pearl, a precious item that isn’t instantly visible and is very personal to the wearer.
The striking boots have been created from Moiré in red, lilac or black with tonal frosted vinyl patches that give the appearance of a retro-futuristic motorcycle boot. The zip puller on the boots also features a crescent moon accessory, this time in silver.
The silhouette for the shoes in this capsule collection takes its inspiration from the footwear used by rhythmic gymnasts.
Two colourways of the shoes use Marine Serre collection fabrications of a signature crescent moon printed stretch Lycra, covered with latex that give a ‘head to toe’ print look to the wearer. An elastic insert panel on the upper of the shoes reflects the gymnasium shoe influence.
“Collaboration is an opportunity to delve into the world of another designer, to empower creative dialogue and blend two aesthetics, in this case to support the vision of the exceptionally talented Marine Serre for her first runway show in Paris”
