Nicholas Kirkwood Presents:
Nicholas Kirkwood launched ‘Nicholas Kirkwood presents’ a series of creative partnerships at the brand’s flagship London boutique at 5 Mount St, Mayfair, October 2017. This is a creative space playing host to a series of takeovers and curated pop-ups aimed at promoting collaborative partnerships with various artists, designers and creatives from a range of design disciplines including jewellery, art, literature and floral sculpture.
September 2018 sees the launch of ‘NK presents Marine Serre’ created to showcase the launch of ‘Nicholas Kirkwood for Marine Serre’ a stand-out capsule collection of shoes created for Marine Serre’s Autumn Winter catwalk collection. Nicholas Kirkwood and emerging designer Marine Serre had their first creative encounter at the LVMH prize finals. Kirkwood was instantly drawn to the Marine Serre aesthetic, seeing her as a Ready-To-Wear creative counterpart. For Kirkwood Marine Serre’s work encapsulates completely modern dressing with its mix of femininity, body conscious silhouettes, luxurious fabrications and sportswear references.
The capsule catwalk collection comprises a mid-calf boot and shoe, both styles have a hidden rubberized metal crescent moon insignia under their heel representing a burgeoning Marine Serre brand code and mirroring the signature Nicholas Kirkwood idea of a hidden pearl, a precious item that isn’t instantly visible and is very personal to the wearer. An unusual and unexpected design feature in this capsule collection is clear soles showing the inner construction of the shoes, an element that is normally hidden.
The striking boots have been created from Moiré in red, lilac or black with tonal frosted vinyl patches framing the foot, giving the appearance of a retro-futuristic motorcycle boot. The zip puller on the boots also features a crescent moon accessory, this time in silver. The silhouette for the shoes in this capsule collection takes its inspiration from the footwear used by rhythmic gymnasts. The shoes use Marine Serre collection fabrications of a signature crescent moon printed stretch Lycra, covered with latex that give a ‘head to toe’ print look to the wearer. An elastic insert panel on the upper of the shoes reflects the gymnasium shoe influence.
“Collaboration is an opportunity to delve into the world of another designer, to empower creative dialogue and blend two aesthetics, in this case to support the vision of the exceptionally talented Marine Serre for her first runway show in Paris”
Serre and Kirkwood collaborated on an installation for the Nicholas Kirkwood Mount Street flagship store to showcase the collection. The installation features the collection of shoes and boots displayed on plinths emblazoned with the Marine Serre signature crescent moon print. The backdrop of the installation has the striking Marine Serre Autumn Winter 2018 campaign and catwalk show projected on to it. The images show the shoes on feet and in movement, at their very best!
