5 Mount Street Flagship Store

In May, 2011 Nicholas Kirkwood opened his flagship store on the prestigious Mount Street, in London’s Mayfair; the first of his generation of designers to do so. The area is now a must-visit for shoppers wishing to experience an enticing mix of the best British and international fashion and accessories designers.

November, 2016 saw Kirkwood unveil a full redesign of the flagship store in association with spatial designer Robert Storey a long term creative collaborator.

The new flagship store features a geometric floor design where Marcuba, Azul and Summer Sky blue Italian marble mélange with 2 grains of Wenge wood laid in a Hungarian stitch pattern to form chevrons – a key brand insignia – running in to rich dark navy carpeting.

On entry to the store the eye is drawn to a new feature wall to your right where stretched out hexagons (another brand insignia) form a diamond shaped shelving system made up of Wenge wood with black metal framework and brass detailing. This shelving display was designed by Kirkwood himself, based on an antique book shelf he found for his apartment. The brass inlay ‘equator’ line runs from the floor up through the textured plaster wall behind the shelving system creating a geometric pattern. The same diamond shaped Wenge wood framework forms the displays for the first two windows running down the side of the store, with the final bay window filled with a two-tiered circular structure in the same Wenge wood with black metal framework and brass detailing.

A second feature wall comprising a giant light box with shelves moulded on to it that display individual shoes. The bottom half of the wall is clad with baby blue plaster. The polished brass ‘equator’ line from the floor again here runs up on to the plaster clad part of the wall taking your gaze with it when you walk through the store.

Chevron shaped geometric modular seating is arranged in two areas in the store both next to large mirrored walls. The chevron seats are covered in a pale grey Kvadrat linen mix fabric with the bases trimmed with polished brass. Interspersed into the seating are Wenge wood display plinths which house arresting floral displays and plants from Fjura (the Nicholas Kirkwood florist of choice). Following the same linear form of the modular seating are a cluster of Wenge wood display plinths in varying heights that are put together to form chevron shapes and used in the centre of the store which spotlight new and special seasonal collections.

Playlists in the store are provided by DJ Benny Blanco who is part of London music collective Nonsense and the air is scented with Ernesto by Cire Trudon as it’s top notes of Leather and Tobacco are two of Kirwood’s favourite things!
